Coaching for actors

Need help with your monologue? I’ve got you covered.

Shhh! It’s a secret.

I don’t really teach Shakespeare.

Ohhh heyyy! If we haven’t met yet, I’m Sarah Guillot.

You might know me as Shakespeare coach.

And it’s true, I am… but that’s not really what I’m all about.

As an acting coach, I specialise in Shakespeare, drama school auditions, and monologue technique. But that’s just the surface.

Here’s what I’m really about:

  • Catching the details in a script that makes your performance insightful and unique. Most actors don’t go deep enough in script analysis, and I love to empower actors with this powerful skill that will make you stand out in auditions.

  • Being truly in your body. These days, most of us are in our heads. Blame social media and auditions on Zoom (and maybe too much focus on psychology and not enough on embodiment).

  • Versatility. Great actors (and hireable actors) need to know how to scale their performances for different styles/tones/genres.

  • Courage. Theatre, and Shakespeare in particular, requires being brave enough to take up space, vocally and physically. This is good for us as actors and as human beings. We need people in the world who are ready to SPEAK UP.

As a coach, I use a combo of tried-and-true exercises from the greats (like Cicely Berry and Patsy Rodenburg) and practical exercises of my own creation, inspired by my years of training in theatre, music and dance.

So if you’re ready to get DETAILED, CONNECTED AND CONFIDENT, head to my calendar below to book with me.

FAQs

  • It really depends on what you need. Typically, we’ll start with a chat so I can get to know your goals, and then I’ll ask to show me whatever you’ve prepared so far. No pressure - it can just be a read through if you’re still in the early stages of prep.

From there, we’ll work through any exercises that will help you master the skills you need to nail your audition. (See the other FAQs about the types of techniques I use.)

Following the session, I’ll email you my notes with any recommended exercises for your homework.

  • Sure can. About half my students are working towards drama school auditions, and we work on classical and contemporary monologues in these sessions.

  • Generally, I recommend allowing a 60 minute session for each monologue you’re working on. For actors preparing two or more monologues for auditions, it is worthwhile looking at my coaching packages below.

If you are only able to manage one session, I recommend booking a 90 minute session - we can usually cover two monologues in that time.

  • In short - heaps of different ones!

In the last twenty years, I’ve gathered so many exercises that I love to utilise for different occasions.

While I am a Shakespeare coach, you might be surprised to hear that my training at university was in contemporary theatre. And not just the usual ‘contemporary’ 20th century playwrights, but those wacky 21st century performance artists and physical theatre companies as well! This is why I work primarily 'through the body', meaning I will get you up on your feet, trying different things, and not stuck in character psychology or 'thinking your way in'.

This type of 'outside in'/text work approach is common in the UK, especially for working in theatre, so if you're US-based or used to screen techniques, it may feel a little different, but don't worry - I'll guide you through it! After sharing these techniques with hundreds of actors, I can telll you that they are soooo effective for improving your acting skills, no matter what type of material you're working on. If you've ever felt like you're kind of winging it, or just hoping your intuition or raw talent is enough, these techniques will make you feel like a pro with a solid acting foundation. And of course, I tailer everything to what YOU need right now - no cookie cutter, 'one-size-fits-all' stuff.

  • I’m based in Australia but I teach actors all over the world. The majority of my students are in the US and UK, and a small portion in Australia and other countries.

  • Yep! You can check out the available packages below.

Please note all prices are in USD.

  • If coaching is out of your budget right now, I recommend self-tape feedback! This is a great way to get affordable feedback from me. You can find out about that here.

  • I’m in Perth, Western Australia, which is GMT+8. When you book, the system will ask you to set your timezone and will convert it for you! Hurray!

Because I work with actors all over the world, I keep my hours quite flexible, so it is usually possible to find a session time that works for your timezone - just don’t leave it too close to your audition in case I’m booked up!

If you can’t see a session time that works for you, please email me at sarah@shakespearewithsarah.com and I’ll see what I can do.

"Sarah has helped me so much! She is an amazing teacher and I am so thankful for her help. Having a few one-on-one sessions with Sarah was incredible and I cannot believe how far I have come. Sarah took my strengths and used them to develop exercises that I could easily grasp and build upon. She helped me to gain a better understanding of the text and how to put my own flare on the characters. Her tutoring brought me to a place where I felt completely prepared for my auditions and I will absolutely be coming straight back to Sarah if I have any Shakespeare auditions/ roles in the future.”

“This girl knows what she’s talking about. She gave me so many ideas of how to play around with my monologue when I was stuck on one rhythm. She doesn’t give floaty advice but gives solid and specific feedback on what to improve on such as pacing, etc. which is immensely helpful for people like me who work better off tangible advice! She is also extremely kind-hearted and warm so you feel very safe with her, because she’s genuinely here to help. Overall, for anyone who is looking to improve their speeches, I highly recommend Sarah!”

“Hi, I just wanted to say that I was offered a place at East15’s MA Acting International, and I wanted to thank you for your advice and support while I was preparing my audition tape. That meant a lot, and made the difference. Thank you.”

“I got Juliet! I did not expect this and I’m so excited to have gotten this role. I am so grateful you to for our session and all of your help. Thank you so much for your advice and the videos you sent me after the coaching session. They helped me feel so much more prepared.”

Angel, UK

“I’m so glad I asked for feedback on my monologues. The feedback you have given me is so detailed and I think will really make a difference during the auditions process. You gave specific feedback and exercises I could do that would help improve my pieces.
Thank you so so much, I would have been lost in this process if not for you! ”
